Barry Wanderers CC made it two wins on the bounce on Saturday with a convincing 10-wicket win against Bridgend Town Thirds at Hayes Point.
Bridgend won the toss and, hoping to take advantage of the better-than-expected weather conditions, opted to bat first. It didn’t take long for the Wanderers to get their first wicket courtesy of an excellent run out by Abhilash Rammohan in just the second over of the game. Opening bowlers Ram and Luke Grant applied pressure and gave up few scoring opportunities.
Unlucky in previous games not to bag a few more wickets, Ram would be rewarded for his excellent spell with two top order Bridgend Town wickets, restricting the visitors to 20-3 from the first 10 overs. Grant was unfortunate to go wicketless in his six-over stint but conceded just nine runs, giving little respite to the batters.
Choosing spin over his usual seam up approach, first change bowler Jack Williams was no less threatening. He made further inroads with four wickets in just three superb overs helped by a sharp catch behind the stumps by Peter Coleman. With the score on 41-6, Gito John was brought into the attack and took two wickets in two balls to be on a hat-trick. The Wanderers fielders closed in. John ran in to bowl. The batter clipped the ball to short mid wicket where Neil Blundell pounced to take a magnificent one-handed diving catch to give John his first hat-trick for the Wanderers. The innings was done in the 17th over, Bridgend Town all out for 53.
In reply, Wanderers openers Blundell and Ed Williams were rarely troubled. Clean hitting on both sides of the wicket and hard running pushed the Wanderers towards the winning total at a canter in just the seventh over. Blundell was the main aggressor with 36 but he was ably supported by Williams with 11. It was another excellent performance in the field by the Wanderers and they stay top of the SEWCL Division 8 league table with five wins out of six. Williams 3-1-12-4; Gito 2-0-11-3; Ram 6-1-16-2
