A BARRY couple, Margaret and Des Lynch recently celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary – 60 years – with a family meal.
The couple were later surprised by a congratulatory card from the King and Queen Consort, sending their ‘heartfelt good wishes’.
Mr and Mrs Lynch married on 23rd February, 1963. It was a heavily snowy Barry on the day, Margaret, formerly Messer, remembers having to dig a trench the day before, to be able to walk out from their residence in Maes y Cwm Street and worrying whether Father Boyle would make it over from Ireland to marry them at St Helen’s Church. It was a joyous occasion with family and friends coming together.
Margaret made her own dress from pale pink floral brocade, she chose a tea dance style and length, again due to the height of the snow! Artificial flowers were needed for the bouquet and buttonholes as the long-term snowfall had cancelled and delayed deliveries.
The couple have enjoyed a long and happy marriage to date, living in Barry before moving to Florida for three years and then returning to Barry, living now on Harbour Road.
They were thrilled with their card from the Royals and it brought a tear to Margaret’s eye.
Des commented: “It’s really special. Not many people will have one of these!”
