Porthcawl’s speedy backs cause problems for Pencoed

Pencoed 14 – Porthcawl 29

PENCOED welcomed Porthcawl and opened the scoring with a penalty goal from Jack Bevan after 15 minutes.

Porthcawl attacked from the restart and young home centre Llyr Harries made a try-saving tackle only metres out. Pencoed back row forward Dan Watkins then showed his kicking skills with a fine clearance from the outside of the boot.

Porthcawl full back Cam Maisey, who was to give the home side trouble for most of the match with his pace and elusive running skills, set up the visitors’ opening score, breaking from around half way to feed left wing Wil Mahoney, who finished impressively.

Bevan then put Pencoed back into the lead with a penalty goal but Mahoney soon got a second try, racing in from 30 metres, beating several defenders in the process. Elliot Bennett added the conversion for the ‘Seaweeds’ to lead 6-12.

Pencoed countered through Jordan Bissett and were a little unlucky when centre Shane Izatt was held up in the act of scoring, so Porthcawl retained their six-point lead at the interval. Bevan notched his third penalty early in the second half before a solo effort from Maisey from 50 metres out extended his side’s lead. Bennett added the extras.

Porthcawl were winning the turnover battle comprehensively with their dangerous three quarters profiting. Bennett kicked a penalty and Porthcawl led 9-22.

Pencoed replacement Corey John then sparked a period of Pencoed pressure with a 40-metre run before Izatt again went close. Pencoed, after once again being held up over the line, were not to be denied, with Rhys Bargery, forcing his way over at the corner flag.

A trademark Izatt break was just held and Pencoed were finishing strongly. However, it was the visitors who sealed matters when play swept to the Pencoed line. The visitors’ scrum half Matt Ellis pounced on a loose ball to score, Bennett converting for a final match scoreline of 14-29.
