Concerns about ‘dripping blood’ from ceiling in Barry Hospital
CONCERNS have been raised about safety and hygiene standards at Barry Hospital after blood was seen dripping from the ceiling of a consulting room.
A relative of a staff member took photographs of the scene and also claimed that rats could be heard moving around in the ceilings at the hospital on Colcot Road.

A spokesperson for Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said: “We are very sorry to hear about the concerns raised regarding the condition of one of our consulting rooms at Barry Hospital.
“As soon as the issues were brought to our attention, colleagues on site promptly informed our estates team, who responded quickly and worked closely with staff to address the situation.
“Immediate steps were taken to ensure the area was clean, safe, and suitable for patient use. The delivery of safe, high-quality care to our patients is of paramount importance to us. This incident does not reflect the standards we strive to uphold.
“We strongly encourage any patients who have concerns during their care to speak directly with staff in the clinical area. Alternatively, concerns can be raised with our dedicated Concerns Team, who can provide a direct response to patients and their families.”
The health board did not reveal which part of the hospital the dripping blood originated from. Barry Hospital runs a blood test service, a GP surgery, an out-of-hours service, a minor injuries unit, outpatient clinics, along with radiology and rehabilitation facilities.
The hospital also has mental health wards for older people, and provides dental services, physiotherapy and occupational therapy.
The reports of blood dripping and rats roaming from the ceiling at Barry Hospital comes two months after a whistleblower revealed images of severe disrepair at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, which is run by the same health board, including leaks, water damage and pigeons being found in the trauma theatre and in corridors.
In May, a 22-page comprehensive service review of theatres at the University Hospital of Wales revealed a series of thefts and the discovery of illegal drugs in a staff locker and stated that inappropriate and racist remarks were made by a senior leader. A police investigation into suspected sabotage of more than 30 sterilised trays at the same hospital in 2021 went unsolved.
