This week, in the Vale…
RECESS has arrived, and I make no apology for how much I look forward to it. Westminster has its rhythms, and breaking out of those to spend time out and about across the Vale, meeting the people and organisations that make this constituency what it is, is always a welcome change of pace.
This week, I wanted to write about two events that I’ve been particularly fortunate to attend.
Last Wednesday, I spent the whole day at the Vale Show, which traces its roots back to 1772, when the Vale of Glamorgan Agricultural Society was founded, making it one of the oldest on record. It’s still one of the highlights of the local calendar, and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting NFU farmers to hear directly about the pressures and opportunities facing agriculture here, as well as catching up with the community groups, young farmers’ clubs and local businesses who give the Show its character.
A special mention must also be afforded to the fantastic Glamorgan Star stall – of course!
I was also fortunate enough to be at the Vale Showground two weeks ago, to help Herbert R Thomas mark an extraordinary milestone: 100 years in business – it was fantastic. The firm was founded to serve the farming and rural community of Glamorgan, and a century on, it’s still doing exactly that. Everyone who contributes to the rural economy keeps this part of Wales working, and I will continue to advocate for them in Westminster.
Agriculture doesn’t always get the national attention it deserves, but it should. It feeds us, shapes our landscape, and underpins a rural economy that supports jobs and livelihoods right across the Vale. Whether it’s a family farm that has worked the same land for generations or a firm like HRT that has grown alongside it, this community deserves recognition, and my support, both here and in Westminster.
This is exactly why recess is such a valuable time. It means more time in the Vale, meeting the people I represent and hearing, first-hand, what’s actually on your minds.
