Three local businesses recently began a joint effort to fundraise for the life-saving local Veterans’ charity, Woody’s Lodge.
The Business Centre (Cardiff) Ltd and its onsite café, Mel’s Café, together with the digital marketing agency, ONCREE, held the first fundraising event – the ‘Great Welsh Veteran Bake Off’ – at the Business Centre’s base in Cardiff Road, Barry.

The bake off was held at Mel’s Café, where 15 business residents went whisk-to-whisk in a fun, but purposeful baking competition. There were plenty of delicious, decadent, diet-breaking cakes made on the day. After the nail-biting bake-off, the floor was opened to an exciting cake sale.
Woody’s Lodge assists ex-service people grappling with poverty, loneliness, homelessness, as well as mental and physical health issues. The team not only provides essential support but also organises fun gatherings and events, fostering social connections and lifelong friendships among Veterans.
Sian Woodland, the Deputy CEO of Woody’s Lodge. She said: “The overwhelming support we received for our charity has truly touched my heart, and it gives me a renewed sense of hope. Seeing businesses and individuals coming together in large numbers to lend a helping hand reassures me that we can sustain our critical work within Welsh veteran communities and save more lives.
“Thank you to The Business Centre, Mel’s Café, ONCREE, all the bake-off participants, and every person who donated to the event. You’re helping us ensure that no one gets left behind.”
One special entry – one of 20 – was a smartie cake made by the eight-year-old grandson of one of the business owners at The Business Centre. He didn’t win, but what a lovely contribution.
Sarah Mason of the Business Centre said: “The Business Centre would like to send a special thank you to Mel, the owner of Mel’s Café, for always being the first to jump in aid of a great cause. The Great Welsh Veteran Bake Off joins our ongoing Barry Bake Off, also held at Mel’s Café, which raises funds for cancer patients. We are so excited to continue this new tradition and help the Welsh Veteran community for many more years to come.”
The Business Centre (Cardiff) Ltd is the home of flexible, professional workspaces, from private serviced offices and collaborative co-working spaces to modern virtual offices.
