BRIGHT orange is the positive colour of the Cancer Charity ’Maggies’ and this colour was worn recently by students in a special Barry Tai Chi class.
Tai Chi practitioner Aly Wiltshire, a teacher with a huge following organised the session. Aly who teaches Shibashi Tai Chi, organised a fundraiser at the Margaret Alexander Community Hall.
Her husband Gary has been treated for prostate cancer at Velindre – the Cardiff ‘hospital of hope’. He is open about the sequence of treatments, tests and monitoring. The Wiltshires are firm advocates of male testing and educating people about the need for men to test and be as vigilant as most women are about breast self examination.
Aly’s regular students from various Barry groups combined for a focussed session and a luxurious coffee morning and buffet followed. Some 70-plus raffle prizes had been donated by students and friends.
Aly Wiltshire reminded students of the wonderful work undertaken by Maggies charity saying: “Maggies is a UK-wide charity which supports individuals who are coping with cancer and both Gary and I have benefited hugely. Most importantly, it supports families too!
“There are centres across Wales and on the Whitchurch Velindre campus, a wonderful team of staff run Maggies and give all kinds of advice, guidance and opportunities to talk about experiences with others.'”
A cheque for £615 was presented to the Maggies team. Aly added: “I am touched by everyone’s kindness in raising funds for this excellent charity. A huge thank you to all of you.”
