STUDENTS at Whitmore High School in Barry have been using their food technology lessons as a springboard for raising cash for local charities.
Over the past year, students have raised and donated over £3,450 to charities and have donated more than 155kg of food to the Vale Foodbank.
The school’s food technology teacher, Mrs Smith said: “Our in-house bakery provides a safe and supportive environment where students develop practical baking skills, confidence, teamwork and independence while making a real difference.
“Students from our team work alongside mainstream students to bake and sell a range of products each week. Every penny of profit goes back into the bakery or is donated to charity.
“As well as the cash and Foodbank donations, our students have supported organisations including Woody’s Lodge, Souls and Soles, Santerpaws Bulgarian Rescue and other local projects.
“They recently worked with Tesco to buy and deliver personalised gift baskets and home-made baked goods to residents at a local care home, which brought smiles to residents.
She added that the communication and life skills involved in running a real bakery definitely improved their employment prospects.
She said: “The bakery has become much more than a baking project. It gives students the opportunity to build confidence, gain practical experience and see first-hand the positive impact they can have on others.
“At Whitmore, we are delighted to share our students’ achievements with the community.”
