Barry’s art gallery hosts Beryl’s first solo show

A NEW exhibition is on show at Art Central Gallery in Barry Library, showcasing work of local artist Beryl Rhys Wilhelm.

A long-time Barry resident, Beryl has lived in the town for nearly 40 years and has been painting “all her life”. She said she was thrilled to be given the opportunity to present her first solo show.

The exhibition runs until Saturday 8th November and features a selection of Beryl’s distinctive pieces. A gallery spokesperson said: “Each infused with a surreal or magical quality drawn from memory and imagination.”

Born in Llanelli, Beryl studied at Llanelli Art College after finishing school. Her artistic journey began in earnest in the early 1970s and since then, she has painted almost every day, developing a unique style that uses just three primary colours and white.

Beryl’s work also passes the acid test of whether people want to own her artwork. In fact, she has sold more than 200 paintings, including a number of commissioned works.

Her art is deeply inspired by the landscapes of Cornwall and Bavaria – her husband’s birthplace – as well as the dramatic mountain scenery of her native Wales.

Cllr Rhiannon Birch, Vale Council cabinet member for Education, Arts, and the Welsh Language, said: “We are delighted to be hosting Beryl’s artwork at the gallery, it is striking in both colour and structure. Each piece offers a unique snapshot into worlds that both exist and are imagined, and she infuses her work with a surrealistic or magical air, inspired by memories and imagination.”
