Barry family has triple internationals
THE Benson family of Barry are celebrating having three internationals at home after two sisters and their brother represented Great Britain in street and ball hockey.
Emily (17), Tom (15) and Sophie Benson (12) represented GB in the recent ISBHF – International Street and Ball Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Liberec, the Czech Republic. Street and ball hockey is a spin off from ice hockey, so that games can be played in venues other than ice rinks.
Their mum, Becki, told the Glamorgan Star: “They all became involved in the game through ball hockey as the girls have the same coach for both ice and ball hockey. They went along to trials in Sheffield as the league for juniors is played mainly in the Midlands and south Yorkshire. There are clubs in Wales but they are mainly senior teams. They went to trials throughout the year but used their ice hockey skills as they don’t play in a league.”
Tom and Sophie go to St Richard Gwyn High School in Barry, and Emily is in Cardiff and Vale College (CAVC) in Leckwith studying BTEC Sport Science.
Emily and Sophie represented GB under-21 women, playing against Slovakia, Canada, USA and the home nation in their pool. They finished fifth in a tournament that was of a high standard.
Tom represented GB under-16 boys, playing against countries such as Slovakia, Switzerland, Canada East, Canada West, the Czech Republic and USA. They finished in eighth place.”
Becki added: “It was a great experience travelling with the team and they enjoyed meeting other players.”
