THE Barry Friends and Neighbours held a hectic June meeting at Beryl Road Pioneer Hall.
The meeting opened with entertainment from Barry Island Ukulele Strummers. Members joined in, singing and clapping along to the familiar songs. Members applauded the group and a collection was taken for their charity.
Karen Fletcher from Age Connects Cardiff and Vale then gave an insight into the Project LEAP and many of the members took the opportunity to sign up for a home visit.
Charlene Duddridge, a community champion from Asda, presented the group with a cheque from the Asda Foundation for £688. This was warmly applauded by all the members, who were then served with tea or coffee, cakes and biscuits.
Commenting on the donation Charlene said: “This will enhance their plans to take a trip down memory lane and reminisce all the incredible occasions they have had over the past 2 decades.
“As an added boost the Asda Foundation have provided the funds to secure the community hall in which the group meet at for the next 6 months.
“The atmosphere during the thank you afternoon was filled with joy, gratitude, and a sense of togetherness that exemplified the strong bond shared by the Friends and Neighbours.”
Malcolm Thompson Store Manager added: “We’re proud to award a donation from the Asda Foundation. Supporting local groups that are on our doorstep like Friends & Neighbours is really important to us – and we hope it will make a real difference to the group.”
Parliamentary candidate Alun Cairns presented volunteers with certificates, it being Volunteers week. The volunteers were thanked and Mr Cairns gave a vote of thanks to Gay.
Members had been asked to bring donations for the Food Bank at Tennyson Road and Gay thanked them. The members are now looking forward to lunch at Brynhill Golf Club and a mystery trip in August.
