THE Glamorgan Iron Horse Vintage Society held the annual Ogmore Castle Tractor Run earlier this month and around 35 tractors took part.
This year’s winner was chosen by the solo judge, Rees Lean (his normal judging partner, David George, was unwell). The accolade went to D J Howell, with his 1958 Nuffield Model Universal 4, who was presented with the trophy plus a medal to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Tractor Run.

The weather was good and the route this year headed west along the A48 through North Cornelly to Sker Farm, west of Porthcawl, which once was part of the Margam Estate. The gathering was given a talk by the farmer Mr Evans on the history of Sker House including the interesting tale about the Maid of Sker.
They visited the memorial which commemorates the steamship SS Samtampa, which was driven ashore and wrecked in severe weather at Sker Point in April 1947. All the crew plus the crew of the Mumbles lifeboat perished in the tragedy.

Basil George, who started the Ogmore Castle Tractor Run 25 years ago, remembered visiting the Samptampa wreck the day after it happened.
The organisers thanked Rob Williams of Ogmore Farm for again supporting the run, as well as the many supporters who attended and, of course, the tractor drivers who made the event a success. All money raised will go into the pot to support local charities. The next Ogmore Castle Tractor Run is planned for Sunday, 3rd October 2027.
