Big win for Barry Youth

Cardiff South Division Two - Rumney 12 Barry RFC Youth 40

SIX tries, three in each half, saw unbeaten Barry RFC extend their winning run to four matches, tightening their grip at the top of the table with a display of expansive handling rugby.

Barry took the initiative from the start, scrum half Cam Hughes profiting from a loose pass to run in an opening interception try to get the scoreboard moving, Marley Paines-Lang converting.

Barry continued to set the pace, back row Tyreece Carey claiming a couple of close-range tries, Paines-Lang converting one to give the Bombers a 19-0 interval lead.

But a lethargic start to the second half allowed a physical and spirited Rumney side back into the game following an unconverted try from a quick tap penalty.

Barry soon regained control, and scores from Hughes and replacement full back Fin Rudkin put them firmly in charge, both tries converted by Paines-Lang. To their credit, Rumney kept on fighting, and their pacy winger added a second for the home team with a blistering run.

But Barry had the last word, with a score from open side Charlie Hutton converted by Paines-Lang.

“We’ve been getting better week on week, and every area we work on in training the boys seem to respond to on the Saturday,” said head coach Peter O’Sullivan.

“This week’s focus was on speed and intent at the breakdown, and we were certainly better in that area. Lineout was very good again with hooker Jensen Wilding’s accuracy and back rowers Max O’Sullivan and Charlie Hutton’s athleticism dominating that area of the game.”

Barry are at home on Saturday (10 October) and will be aiming to make it five wins from five when Pentyrch, who have lost all four of their matches, visit the Reservoir Field.
