PUPILS and staff at All Saints Primary School in Barry are celebrating the successful creation of a new sensory garden – a vibrant and calming space designed to awaken the senses and support well-being.
A school spokesperson said: “Thanks to a generous grant from the National Lottery, the school community has transformed a section of the grounds. The vision for the garden was brought to life with significant input from the children themselves, who wanted a space that would offer both stimulation and a sense of calm.
“The garden features a sensory walk made from a variety of natural and man-made materials to provide tactile stimulation. Raised beds are filled with colourful flowers, aromatic herbs, fruits, and vegetables, giving pupils the chance to learn about nature through hands-on experiences.
“Children are now learning how to grow and care for fruits, vegetables and herbs and are even selling their produce to parents. A large potting shed offers a dedicated area for nurturing plants and storing tools, while versatile log seating allows for flexible learning and relaxation spaces.
“Much of the project’s success is due to the hard work and support of the PTA and parent volunteers, who donated time, gardening supplies, compost, and plants.”
“The children absolutely love this new area,” said Mrs Evans. “It’s a place where they can connect with nature, learn about gardening, and enjoy the calming effects of the outdoors.”
