Biker seriously injured in barbed wire incident

A male mountain biker has sustained serious neck injuries caused by barbed wire obscured by branches over the weekend.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is now underway and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information.

The 39-year-old required hospital treatment and is now recovering at home.

The incident occurred on Sunday, 19th December, whilst the man was riding downhill the Bwlch Mountain trail, which runs into Ton Pentre. The area attracts mountain bike riders from all over Wales, including the Vale of Glamorgan.

Rhondda Deputy Local Policing Inspector Karl Emerson, said: “This was not initially reported to police but we became aware of the concerning post on social media and made contact with the male involved.

“He was understandably traumatised by his experience and was very lucky not to have sustained even worse injuries.

“Our priority now is to identify the exact location of the incident to ensure there is no further risk to the public and establish how this came to happen.

“We have officers who are searching the trails in the area and urge anybody using them to be vigilant, to let us know if they come across anything suspicious, and to take extra care.”
