Bridgend woman named as fourth victim after paddleboard tragedy
A Bridgend woman has been named as being the fourth to die following a paddleboard tragedy in Pembrokeshire last week.
Dyfed-Powys police had previously said that Morgan Rogers (24), Nicola Wheatley (40), and Paul O’Dwyer (42) had died following an incident in Haverfordwest on a stretch of the river Cleddau running through the county town, and that a fourth person was in a critical condition in hospital.
Today, Saturday 6th October, police named Andrea Powell (41) from Bridgend as having tragically died.
In a force statement, it was also revealed that a woman from the South Wales area was arrested yesterday, Friday 5th October, on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter as part of police inquiries but has since been released under investigation.
The victims were part of a tour of nine people from the South Wales area on an exploration of the river Cleddau. Five were pulled out of the flooded and fast flowing water by the emergency services but sustained no injuries.
A Dyfed-Powys police spokesperson said, “Following the incident on the Cleddau River in Haverfordwest on Saturday 30th October, Dyfed-Powys Police can confirm a woman from the South Wales area has been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter as part of the investigation. She has been released under investigation.
“Sadly, we can also confirm that 41 year old Andrea Powell from the Bridgend area, who was in hospital following the incident has now died.
“Our thoughts are with her family, and all those involved in this tragic incident.
We are supporting her family and would ask for their privacy to be respected at this very difficult time.”
