Sport – Cowbridge’s high tempo game puts Gilfach on the rack

IF the previous Saturday was very warm, 9th September was a scorcher at 27C – not ideal for playing rugby. Gilfach Goch were the visitors to Cowbridge RFC.
There was great action from the start, with a home try after just 40 seconds – an early candidate for the quickest of the season. Skilful handling was finished off by right wing Charlie Locke and converted by outside half Rhyddian Morris.
After a forwards’ touchdown from Gilfach, some smooth handling from the Cowbridge backs was completed with an Adam Dix try, again converted by Rhyddian. The visitors’ back row were finding it difficult to cope with the speed and tricks of captain Dix. This was highlighted by a yellow card in the 39th minute to his opposite number for persistent offside.
As in the week before, tighthead George Thomas was at the forefront of all Cowbridge forward drives. At half it was 20-12 in favour of Cowbridge. On the restart, a Bridge forwards’ charge was finished off by hooker Rhys Davies whose size was welcomed in the middle of the front row. Jack Forsyth was again having a great game at lock, as was his second row partner Owen John.
The home backs were now running almost all the ball they got, and Evan Thomas at centre and Ioan Williams, coming into the line at speed, were creating havoc. Tries were now being run in at regular intervals. Gilfach never threw in the towel but the speed and fitness of the Bridge allowed for a score line of Cowbridge 65 Gilfach 12.
The man of the match was George Thomas, only just in front of Evan Thomas and Rhyddian Morris. Once again, “Well done boys”.
