THE Winter Talks programme began on 16 November at Barry Yacht Club with award-winning poet and author, Professor Tony Curtis.
In her introductory welcome, Dr Jane Salisbury said that Tony’s recently published book had been a finalist in the Paul Torday national competition for a first debut novel over 60. Tony commented: “I was actually 73 when I was writing it. That should count for something!”
Around 50 attendees listened closely to excerpts from his book, Darkness in the City of Light, which is set in war time Paris. He showed fascinating photographic images of Hitler’s one day visit to the beautiful city. Tony’s engaging narrative testified to extensive documentary research which helped him describe the chaotic, collaborative scenarios permeating the French capital.
The real-life serial murderer Dr Marcel Petio, who had various identities, is central to the pervading theme of darkness in the novel.
In her formal thanks on behalf of club members, Professor Gerda Roper acknowledged the author’s scholarship and commended his animated reading and rich but disturbingly grim portrayal of Paris during war time.
Non-members are welcome to attend the weekly talks on Thursdays at 8pm and should note that the Compass Bar and Kitchen are serving basket meals from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.
