Twelve Soroptimists and supportive pals from the Barry and District Club were taught how to make ‘Stacking rings’ in a three-hour introductory silversmithing workshop recently.
Gemma Robertson of Vale Jewellery transformed her High Street shop into a carefully kitted out studio. Two benches were laid up with specialist gear, blow torches, pliers, mallet hammers and were each occupied by six focused students. Gemma demonstrated sizing, annealing, soldering and enjoyed teaching individuals some of the delicate tricks and manipulations.
Given the imminent festive season, Prosecco, Cranberry mocktails, chocolates and mince pies were shared among participants.
Mary Tornabene a core member of the Soroptimist Craft group said: “We are all delighted with our first attempts at silversmithing. I’m sure we shall return for another session with Gemma to make bangles.”
