20-YEAR-OLD Evie Wong from Rhoose Lifeguards took a silver medal in the recent World Lifesaving Championships that were held on the Gold Coast of Australia.
Evie was selected to represent Great Britain after some excellent results at the team trials, both in the sea and on the beach.
A Rhoose Lifeguard spokeswoman said: “To come away with silver in the Surf Ski race in her first Open World Championships was simply amazing!
“After an explosive start, she led the race from the whistle, leaving the rest of the field in her wake, trying to chase her down. Only one could, and Evie was caught on the line by the Australian paddler who came from behind on a wave.
“However, it was an outstanding performance by Evie. All her hard work, dedication and commitment to training paid off. She not only showed her strength in the sea but also on the beach, taking fifth in the sprints, 20th in flags, sixth in the beach relay, fourth in Ocean Relay (Taplin) and seventh in the Mixed Ocean Relay.
“These were amazing results achieved at the home of surf lifesaving. Evie did her club and country proud.”
