Llantwit Major: Can you fill a gap in the town’s story?

A query has come to the history society which we cannot answer, and we wonder if any Glamorgan Star readers can?

In East Street in Llantwit Major (pictured in an undated photo) is Bank House, and we are trying to identify which bank it was. We know that the town in 1896 had Barclays in Commercial Street and London Joint City and Midland Bank in East Street. This is now the ice cream shop. In 1926, there was also a National Provincial bank.

Bank House was bequeathed in a will in 1936 by Wallace Alexander Harris  and Rose Harris (recorded in the electoral register and cencus) to Tabernacle Chapel, Methodist Lane, and was an investment for them.

Also in East Street is the public house of the Kings Head. This brewed its own beer in premises at the back of the building until sometime in the 19th Century. In the 1700s it was called the Queens Head  but the name was changed to the Kings Head with the change of monarchy – but it has not changed since.
