The January meeting for members of the Glamorgan Farmers’ Golf Society was held recently at Cottrell Park Golf Club on the Button course.
The competition for the Llanharan Concrete Ltd Cup was very special as it gave members the opportunity of remembering the late Mr Gino Cocco, who donated the cup to the society over 30 years ago and who sadly passed away in October 2020.
Gino, who captained the society in 2010, was unquestionably one of the society’s most popular members and thanks to his amazing character and personality, he never failed to make an impact on people he met. Although Covid restrictions were in force at the time, the route from his home just outside Cowbridge to the All Hallows Church in Miskin, Pontyclun, and finally to the crematorium in Bridgend, passing his business in Llanharan, was lined with hundreds of friends wishing to pay their last respects. Gino will be sadly missed but most definitely will not be forgotten.
For this year’s Llanharan Concrete Ltd Cup, prizes were generously supplied by Mr Nick Cocco. Several of the 30 competitors failed to come to terms with the difficult underfoot conditions after overnight rain. Only four recorded more than 30 Stableford points.
Leading the field at the close play with 36 points was Dan Jarvis, finishing four points ahead of his father Tim, who finished runner up with 32. In third place was Charles Vicary, also with 32 points, followed by Julian Kelly with 30.
Dan Jarvis also hit the longest drive down the selected hole, in addition to being nearest the pin twice on the par-3 holes. Also successful on the par-3 holes were Griff Morgan and Huw Williams. Dai John once again needed to visit the winners’ enclosure but not as a result of his golfing ability. Dai correctly guessed 42 balls would fail to return home, resulting in £50 being raised for the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital – a charity that meant so much to the late by Mr and Mrs Cocco.
The society’s next meeting at Southerndown Golf Club on 24th February will also feature the Captain’s Drive-in for David Harris, who is looking forward immensely to seeing as many members, friends and neighbours as possible there to witness the moment. The day will be sponsored by Mr Clive Edwards of Clive Edwards Construction Ltd.
