Great Get Together in Llantwit Major
“We are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us”
THIS month marks seven years since Jo Cox MP was murdered in her constituency of Batley and Spen and the Jo Cox Foundation is launching its seventh annual ’Great Get Together’ - nationwide community events inspired by the message from her very first speech in Parliament: “We are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us.”
This year, the official Great Get Together weekend takes place from Friday 23rd June to Sunday 25th June. Wales’s first ‘More in Common’ group in Llantwit Major is planning two weekends bursting with community connection.
This will include:
- PoetryFest (23rd June – Saturday 1st July) – sharing poems (themes: belonging and community).
- PhotoFest (23rd June – Saturday 1st July) – sharing photography (themes: belonging and community}
- Great Get Together Teddy Bear’s Trail (23rd June – Saturday, 1st July). Starting point – Llantwit Major Library.
- Great Walk Together (Saturday, 24th June: Walk 11am, picnic alongside cricket match from 1pm)
- Chatty Café (Saturday, 1st July, 10.30am to 12.30pm, CF61, Station Road)
- Great Get Together Teddy Bear’s Picnic (Saturday, 1st July, 1pm to 3pm, Lorna Hughes Park, wet weather fallback CF61)

The Great Get Together ends in Llantwit with a special Teddy Bears Picnic on Saturday 1st July (1pm to 3pm) at Lorna Hughes Park, featuring silly games and races for kids and parents, and a surprise visit by a special bear with a message of kindness.
Local mum Laura Henderson was inspired by the life of Jo Cox to initiate the town’s first Great Get Together back in 2017. She said: “We’re thrilled to take the theme of belonging for this year’s Great Get Together from our town to the heart of Cardiff – linking up with new friends across southeast Wales.
Six years on and now chair of the first More in Common group in Wales, Laura adds: “This year we are working with our friends at More in Common Cardiff on events that celebrate community and tie in the Month of Community, Refugee Week and Pride Month.”
