IN BARRY, there is great excitement as filming for the final Gavin and Stacey continues. However, in Pencoed the crowds turned out for a different Gavin, as Welsh international Gavin Henson turned out for his junior club.
Pencoed RFC had a busy weekend as the new season started. This included a new second team called The Rams, captained by Tom Daniel, the grandson of the president Mal Summers. Wales and Lions Gavin Henson made his return to his junior club to play for the First team as No 10. He paid his own tribute to the club that first developed his talent. He kicked a penalty and conversion and showed some nice touches along the way but couldn’t stop his team from losing 30-10 to Heol-y-Cyw.
The player of the match for Heoly-Cyw was Lloyd Wilson and Pencoed’s player of the match was Dylan Bishop.
Club president Terry Rees said: “It’s amazing, it’s such an uplift for the club. The percentage Gavin has put on this crowd… I wouldn’t like to think!”
Former Pencoed treasurer Will Jones that the club’s success at uncovering talent was due to its strong structure at all age groups. He listed Wales internationals Scott Gibbs, Gareth Thomas, Gareth Cooper, Gavin Henson and more recently Tommy Reffell and Sam Costelow.
In women’s rugby Kayleigh Powell, Robyn Wilkins, Mel Clay are Union internationals, with Lauren Atkins and Leann Burnell getting rugby league caps.
Pencoed Youth won 41-6 in their opening fixture while The Rams lost 34-7 against Mountain Ash in the conference east league on Friday. The player of that match was Fabio Leaven. The Rams were encouraged by a strong second half performance where they shared the points 7 – 7.
It was a busy Sunday with minis and juniors from under-7 to under-16 all playing.
