Rural competition is keeping skills alive

Rural competition is keeping skills alive. By BASIL GEORGE:

The Vale of Glamorgan Ploughing and Hedging Society has finalised its programme for the annual ploughing match on Sunday 11th September. The venue will be Redlands Farm, Bonvilston, CF5 6TQ, courtesy of Mr and Mrs Tudor Harris.

There will be eight classes including Open Vintage Trailer, High Cut and Commercial Reversible ploughs. Once again, it is planned to have a couple of teams of horse-drawn ploughs on the field.  In addition, a steamer will be in attendance through the day.

The Ferguson Class will comprise the Welsh Open Championship for the model T 20 tractor and general purpose two-furrow plough. These tractors and ploughs were made by Harry Ferguson in Coventry from 1946 to 1956 and are prized by their owners.  The entries for this class will use the tractor and plough basically as it left the factory with no added attachments.  It is the only class in which all the competing outfits are the same.

All competitors are encouraged to send in their entry forms as early as possible, as the committee has noted that the number of competitors increase year on year and the ploughing area could fill up very quickly.  The organisers are intending to cater for all entries but it might be a case of first come, first served.

Car parking is well catered for with entry fees for all adults at £5 each, which will include a full programme of the event.  The gate will open at 10.00am and the day will finish with prize-giving around 5.00pm.

Further information can be obtained from the chairman, John Thomas, on 07879 026937 or secretary, Sarah Radcliffe on 07976 950680.
