JOURNALIST and broadcaster Clare Balding will be in Penarth on Friday (25th September) to discuss her life and to celebrate the publication of the paperback edition of her debut novel, Pastures New.
An Evening with Clare Balding will take place at St Cyres School Auditorium on Sully Road, beginning at 7pm.
Clare, 55, is the daughter of the late racehorse trainer Ian Balding, and from early childhood, she shared her father’s passion for the sport, becoming a successful amateur flat jockey between 1988 and 1993.
After graduating with a 2:1 honours English degree from Cambridge in 1993, she became a BBC radio trainee, and the following year she began presenting horse racing on TV. She has worked extensively on Summer and Winter Olympics since 1994, and is also a passionate fan of rugby league, a sport she presented on the BBC for many years.
Her novel, Pastures New, tells the story of Alex, who has perfected the art of dodging responsibility during her almost 40 years, until an unexpected letter turns her life upside down. She has inherited a crumbling sheep farm in wildest, wettest Wales, which was far removed from her life plan.
Following Alex’s move, her closest companion is a stubborn Welsh terrier, she begins speed-reading The Idiot’s Guide to Farming, and her arrival has set the village gossip mill spinning. With the farm near collapse, Alex sets out to uncover the truth behind her mysterious inheritance.
