Kidical Mass cycling event invites families to Barry:
A family cycling event will take place in Barry tomorrow 24th September – the first in Wales to be organised under the ‘Kidical Mass’ movement.
Kidical Mass is a worldwide movement. Cyclists from 0 to 99 years old take over the streets to reclaim the road space in colourful bicycle demonstrations. The format focuses on children and sustainable mobility.
The Barry event will be on International Kidical Mass day, which will see family friendly cycle rides happening in 200 locations worldwide.
Aoife Blight, Kidical Mass Barry organiser, said: “This is all about getting families out on their wheels, be it bikes, trikes or scooters, for a fun and easy ride from Barry Island to The Knap. The aim is to show families how easy it is to cycle along our beautiful coastline here in Barry and to get more people thinking about walking and wheeling instead of using their cars for short journeys.
“We’ll be using the shared use paths as much as possible. There will be some short sections on quiet roads around the Knap but our marshals will be out in force keeping everyone safe and together. We hope that the ride will highlight the need for safe connected cycle routes around Barry and that cycling and wheeling are real options for getting around our brilliant town.
“This cycle is open to everyone. We’re running it as part of the Climate Coalition’s Great Big Green Week series of events so we’d love it if people wanted to get dressed up and wear a little bit of green. Sustrans Cymru will be joining us at the end of the ride for a Bling your Bike session! It’ll be great fun.”
The event will start at 12pm, meeting at the Promenade Gardens on Barry Island. The route follows the shared use path across the Causeway towards Parade Gardens and finishes at the Richard Taylor Skate Park at the Knap.
