Llantwit Major will be overflowing with word, image and song for its festival weekend
Llantwit Major is busily gearing up for These3Streams, a feast of music, art and literature, taking place over the weekend of 10th – 12th June.
There are 27 separate events, including one with legendary Magnum photographer David Hurn, who will be presenting highlights from his long life behind the lens. David photographed the Beatles in A Hard Day’s Night, Jane Fonda in Barbarella and snapped the iconic image of Sean Connery holding a gun in Goldfinger. He also took one of the most poignant photographs to come out of Aberfan: two young boys, with arms wrapped around each other, surveying the devastation.
Dynamic poet Rufus Mufasa kicks the festival off on Friday night with a mixture of street food and poetry at Indonesian restaurant, Siti. Then it’s over to the town hall for a heady brew of words and music with raconteur Mike Church and friends, all washed down with award-winning beer from local brewer Tomos & Lilford.
Artists will be taking over every available space in the town, creating pop up exhibitions, an art trail for families, art workshops and demos. Even the yarn bombers have joined in and are adding to the feeling of fiesta by decorating the town with the festival colours. Other highlights include ‘Afternoon Scream Tea at The West House’ with thriller writer Louise Mumford and Dr Who spin-off author Chris Lynch, and an Art Demo from Peter Cronin, fellow of the RSMA.
Local history enthusiasts will be intrigued by Katie Munnik’s discussion of her novel, The Aerialists, based on the true story of Louisa Maud Evans, who fell to her death from a hot air balloon during the Great Exhibition in Cardiff in 1896.
Music will be provided by talented local musicians, including joyful Llantwit ceilidh band, Thingummyjigs, who will be getting feet tapping in the town square on Saturday afternoon, followed on Sunday by Cardiff’s Oasis One World Choir, who will fill the town with their beautiful harmonies.
