On the Beat

By Inspector Mark Henderson

THIS summer we saw a spate of graffiti in Barry. The graffiti caused damage to many business and personal properties and was a real eyesore to people living, working and visiting Barry.

Due to the co-operation of the community, officers were able to identify the people responsible for these crimes and due to their age and previous good character they are being dealt with by way of restorative justice.

Restorative Justice is about putting victim needs at the centre of the criminal justice system, finding positive solutions to crime and encouraging young people to be accountable for the consequences of their actions.

In May and June we saw a rise in vehicle crime in the Barry area. Again, due to community intelligence and good private CCTV we were able to arrest and charge a male with several of these offences. He is still awaiting trail but remains in custody.

Most of the offences committed were on vehicles that were left insecure so I would like to take this opportunity to remind people to leave their vehicles secured.

Also, during June there were a number of dwelling and shed burglaries throughout the Vale.

Investigative opportunities identified a male who has since been charged with seven burglaries. He remains in custody awaiting trial.
