Our plan to create a community garden in Barry

When I lived in London, I used to occasionally catch the train to Kew Gardens, as where I was living was miles and miles of housing and green space was sparse. Used to living surrounded by green spaces, it was something I missed dreadfully.

Today the world is starting to recognise the need more and more for green spaces and the need to protect all sorts of flora and fauna and look after the planet far more than we have.

Here in Barry across the four Anglican churches we have been taking this seriously, looking at how we can do things to develop what green space we have and add to the community, as well as being far more environmentally and ecologically minded.

One such thing we are excited about, although it’s in very early stages, is the rear of St Mary’s Holton Road, where we want to create a community garden – somewhere people can stop a while and maybe schools can be involved. The spirituality of a building spilling out onto the space around…

We were lucky to look around St Peter’s community garden in Fairwater and it was inspiring what has been created there. A space for community, schools and anyone to enjoy a place of sanctuary and healing for people. One thing we were particularly interested in was the fact they kept bees, something we think is definitely worth investigating.

However, what we also learned is bees like a little bit of privacy and so, if we do decide on creating a bee-friendly space, like the great movie stars, their homes will be kept private so they won’t be disturbed by the paparazzi. Bees are extraordinary in all they do and an extraordinary creation of God’s.

I’ll admit I’m not a brilliant gardener – my mother came for lunch and informed me the plant in the bathroom was dead. So I’m definitely not the best example but we are blessed with some enthusiastic people. However, if anyone fancies being part of our environmental endeavours, I’m a dab hand at making tea and coffee and all are welcome.
