Pencoed shock league leaders in memorial match

PENCOED RFC welcomed a strong Neath Athletic side – the league leaders – and the game started with both teams observing a minute’s silence in memory of Rhys ‘Mev’ Watkins.

In fact, the game was proudly sponsored by the Watkins family in his memory – a heartfelt gesture that reflects the strength of family, legacy and community at the club.

Pencoed came out on top in a 13–12 thriller, digging deep in a performance that showed real heart, grit and togetherness across the squad.

There were two man of the match awards on the day. The Watkins family man of match went to Iwan Powell for his all-round game but in particular his dangerous running with ball in hand.

The players’ man of match was Connor Jones, the team captain, chosen by his teammates for leading from the front once again.

Connor continues a proud rugby lineage as the great‑grandson of PL (Lyn) Jones, one of Pencoed’s most famous rugby figures, and the son of Gareth Jones, a former Bridgend and Pencoed standout whose name still carries real weight around the club.
