Ogmore-by-Sea’s Christian Williams saddled three winners at Southwell recently.
His Prince Cleni, under Jack Tudor, took the handicap chase, then an hour or so later he won the maiden hurdle with Fixed Fantasy with Nick Scolfield in the saddle. Later still his Tonto Foley, partnered by Tudor, took the novices’ handicap hurdle. making it a day to remember.
Another Welsh rider who has been in cracking form is Sean Bowen who at Perth recently won on AN MHI, Walking The Walk, Ballykeel and Mrs Paisley.
Bridgend Races
Did you know that in days long gone, horse racing took place in the Bridgend area?
Well, this is how Ruffs Guide to the Turf of 1867 described the racecourse: “Bridgend is situated on Ogmore Down and is somewhat in the form of a figure six. The soil is sandy.”
As for Cardiff racecourse it “is nearly an oval course of a mile and 52 yards, with a straight run-in of a quarter of a mile, perfectly flat, over well drained land, and the whole can be seen from the stands.” In 1844, there were 151 racecourses in Great Britian and some 10 years later, Wrights Book of Steeplechasing lists the names of 110 racecourses.
