Centurions’ high scoring is in vain as rain intervenes

THE Sully Centurions Cricket Club got the new season underway but there was a dampener as both the First and Second XI games were spoiled by the rain.

The Firsts hosted neighbours Barry Athletic at Burnham Avenue and got off to a good start, openers Lloyd Bruce and Kieron Ferriday sharing a half century stand, before Bruce was caught by Barry captain Ashley Baker, off the bowling of Crompton for 32. Shae Ellis then joined Ferriday and shared another big partnership, which took the score to 113, when he was bowled for 50 by Dilan Amarasuriya.

This brought Gethin Hicks to the crease. He and Kieron Ferriday took a liking to the bowling and boundaries began to flow. By the time Amarasuriya bagged his second wicket (that of Ferriday for a well-made 66) the score had rattled along to 234. The last wicket to fall was Harri Edwards, who fell to Nathan Wills, lbw for 5. Centurions finished on 234-4, with Hicks unbeaten on 52. However, the weather intervened and Barry could not start their innings. The match was eventually abandoned.

The Second XI got off to a flyer on their first ever trip to Glangrwyney. New signing Basil John soon got into his stride, finding gaps in the field and punishing the bad ball. Despite the loss of skipper Zia Gehlan for just four, the scoreboard kept ticking over. Bharat joined in the fun and hit seven in a 42-run partnership. At 59 for 2, Shan Rehman joined Basil and the pair enjoyed a century stand, which finally came to a halt in the 23rd over when Shan was bowled by Iestyn Devoy for 25.

Gurvinder Singh carried on in the supporting role, as Basil continued to find the boundary regularly. After his departure for 21, Basil John finally fell to Waldeck for a magnificent 163, with the score on 233-4. Shafiqur Rehman took over the role of aggressor and hit an entertaining half century, as 100 runs were scored in the last 12 overs.

Obviously, Basil John was Centurions’ man of the match, with Mark Waldeck, who returned figures of 3-42, being the home side’s best bowler.

After tea, there was a delayed restart, due to rain. Unfortunately, there was only time for nine overs before the rain returned, causing the teams to go off. Once off, the weather showed no signs of abating so, like the First XI’s match, the game was abandoned. Nevertheless, there was plenty to be impressed with in Centurions’ batting display and the form of two new boys, Basil John and Shafiqur Rehman.
