Sun shines on Barry Athletic finals day

THERE was double delight for Wendy Edwards and Chris Whatley on Barry Athletic Bowls Club’s Finals Day. Both contested two finals on Bank Holiday Sunday, and both emerged with two victories.

Edwards won both the Ladies Novice and Over-60s Ladies’ finals, and Whatley won both the Men’s Championship and the Men’s Pairs with Dai Wright.

Sally Hayward was involved in three finals, emerging victorious in one, the Ladies Pairs with Jude Howell. Julia Jones contested two finals, winning the Ladies Championship. Scott Howell and Zak Gray each contested two finals, but both lost out on the day.

Tournament organiser Neil Jewess reflected on a successful day, with the path to the finals starting in April when he issues entry forms, and the draws held in May. “There on normally 10 finals, but only nine today because of one walkover,” he said. “But I think it’s been a good day.”

Allocating the rinks for the finals “proved a challenge because you can’t play on the same one again if you are in more than one final. Today we had a lady with three finals in all sessions and five other people with two.

“And when I set out this morning, with the Barry Triathlon on, and roads closed, I thought it was going to be difficult to get here. But no problems. We took about 30 seconds longer than normal.”

Now he’s looking forward to a home Alliance League derby against Barry Romilly on 9 September. “We’ll use all six rinks, with 48 bowlers in action. It’s just absolutely a lovely day.”
