Swan dies in Barry of outbreak of Avian Flu

The Glamorgan Star reported back in December on warnings made by Wales’ Chief Vet, Christianne Glossop, that the country risked losing flocks of birds due to the worst ever outbreak of bird flue.
Christianne Glossop commented: “Poultry keepers need to take action now to make sure they have biosecurity measures in place to protect their birds, or risk losing their flocks to bird flu.”
Today, 15th February, the Vale Council is working with the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) to investigate recent swan fatalities at the Knap Lake, Barry.
It has been confirmed that one of the carcasses has tested positive for H5N1 Avian Influenza.
The council is working to minimise the risk of further transmission at the Knap and our other parks and country parks. Avian influenza spreads from bird to bird by direct contact or through contaminated body fluids and faeces. It can also be spread by contaminated feed and water, or by dirty vehicles, clothing and footwear.
Avian Influenza mainly affects birds. It is very uncommon for the virus to be passed from birds to humans, or other mammals. The risk to public health is very low.
As a precautionary measure, the council is asking all members of the public not to hand feed birds at any of our parks or country parks.
If you find a dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese or ducks) or other dead wild birds, such as gulls or birds of prey, you should report them to APHA on 03459 33 55 77.
Any visibly sick birds should also be reported via the above number and must not be touched or handled.
The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) carries out year-round avian influenza surveillance of dead wild birds. This is submitted via public reports and warden patrols.
