The Vale Show is back – in a new showground

250th anniversary of the Vale of Glamorgan Agricultural Society

The Vale Show returns on Wednesday 10th August and has moved on a new site in Penllyn.

This year also marks the 250th anniversary of the Vale of Glamorgan Agricultural Society, which was established in 1772 at a meeting in the Bear Hotel, Cowbridge, making it one of the very oldest on record.

Show secretary Sarah Fenner told the Glamorgan Star: “This year marks the beginning of an exciting new era for the Vale Show as we move to Penllyn. There is a new site and a new layout. In a sense, the show is coming home to Cowbridge.

“The Vale Show regularly attracts over 20,000 people from all walks of life. It is now the largest one day event in the Vale. Alongside the agricultural exhibits there are more than 200 trade stands. You will be able to buy anything from a milkshake to a new car or even a state-of-the-art tractor.

“A Food Court enjoys pride of place on the field selling produce, most of which has been grown or made in the Vale, along with a Shopping Mall which allows small traders to exhibit. The Show hosts a large Craft Fair and Horticultural Show along with a Home Produce marquee. There will be a Kennel Club registered Dog Show, with as many as 700 dogs of all shapes and sizes competing.

“We also have a fascinating Rabbit Show and there is a Countryside Marquee run in association with the Glamorgan Small Holders. The vintage tractor displays have become more and more popular and this year we also have a classic Land Rover show.

“In the main ring during the afternoon we have the biggest and best display of farm machinery in action. The Quack Pack for the children to get involved before the spectacular Grand Parade of all the prize-winning animals. We have the Rockwood Dog Display Team and the competition at the show concludes with the Scurry competition.

“It will be a very busy day with lots to see and do for everyone. We are really looking forward to seeing the crowds back at the show on Wednesday 10th August. You can buy advance tickets at a discounted rate online at www.valeofglamorganshow.co.uk”

Appeal for photographs

Sarah added: “It seems that a 250th anniversary is called a semiquincentennial  and in 2022 we celebrate 250 years since the Vale of Glamorgan Agricultural Society was formed in 1772.

“As we mark this extraordinary anniversary with the show this summer, there will be a virtual gallery of photographs and memories over the generations. If you have any photographs or mementos of your time at the show that you would be willing to share with the society, then please contact
