THE town of Llantwit Major welcomed its first visit in nearly 10 years from members of its twin town, Le Pouliguen, recently, heralding the resurgence of the long-established link.
The towns were first twinned in 1982 when members of both towns set up a biannual exchange visit between the two coastal towns.
This year, most of the French contingent arrived for a packed five-day visit by coach, to be met by waiting host families. Two visitors, Frederick Dounant and Yvonnick Boisneau followed shortly by bicycle having cycled all the way from Le Pouliguen in Brittany.
Town Twinning secretary, John Deakin said: “This year’s visit had been timed to coincide with the Llantwit Major 10K Race and a number of the visitors and hosts took part in the event and commented on the scenery they enjoyed on the coastal route.”

During the exchange trip, the French party also visited St Illtud’s Church where Rector Edwin Counsell explained the history of the church and its links with Brittany. The visitors also enjoyed trips to St Fagans National Museum of History and a visit to Cardiff.
Evening events were also on the itinerary, including a fish and chip supper from Farnhams where the mushy peas were a big hit. There was also a traditional British Bingo evening. The final meal was spent in the impressive medieval hall of the Duke of Wellington in Cowbridge with dinner and dancing.
John Deakin added: “There are many organisations in Le Pouliguen which would like to link with clubs in Llantwit, including their cycling, running, tennis and football clubs. Last year, links were established between St Illtud’s Junior School and Le Pouliguen School. If anyone is interested in joining the Town Twinning, we would welcome hearing from individuals, families or groups.”
