Write your will for free in March with Tŷ Hafan
The Tŷ Hafan children’s hospice has provided care and support for more than 1,000 children and their families across Wales since it first opened in 1999.
Currently caring for around 300 children with life-limiting conditions, Tŷ Hafan provides respite care at the hospice in Sully and outreach support in homes and communities across Wales.
It costs £4.5 million to run Tŷ Hafan’s care services annually and 25 per cent of that comes from the generosity of supporters via gifts in their wills.
Now, the charity is offering people the opportunity to make or amend their will free of charge this March – with the hope that they will consider including a gift in their will for Tŷ Hafan.
One family to benefit from services provided by Tŷ Hafan are the Merediths from Barry, who describe the charity as a “total lifeline”.
Mum and Dad Sophie and Sean were just 22 when their son Ollie, now six, was diagnosed with the ultra-rare MOSAIC Syndrome. At four months old Ollie was admitted to hospital, and at 18 months he and his family had their first experience of Tŷ Hafan.
“If we did not have support from Tŷ Hafan we would have no respite at all,” said Sophie. “The hydrotherapy pool is amazing, plus the socialising with other children and families. The nurses there have known Ollie all his life and they are amazing with him. Tŷ Hafan has been there for us all the way.”
Abbie Barton, Gifts in Wills senior fundraiser for Tŷ Hafan, said: “During March, Tŷ Hafan is partnering with five solicitors in Cardiff, Swansea and Monmouth to give people the opportunity to make or amend their will for free.
“No matter how big or small, every gift in a will makes a significant difference. By gifting as little as one percent of your estate to Tŷ Hafan, you could fund 120 sessions of music therapy, allowing children like Ollie to express themselves through music or dancing.”
Long-standing supporter of Tŷ Hafan, Elisabeth Wheeler, of Cardiff, explains why she has included a gift in her will.
“I started playing Tŷ Hafan’s Crackerjackpot lottery around 20 years ago,” she says. “I feel the support and care they give to children and their families must be invaluable. What would their lives be like without Tŷ Hafan? It doesn’t bear thinking about.
“Recently I needed to amend my will and Tŷ Hafan was a definite choice to be included. I am pleased to be able to feel that I can leave a legacy to the hospice.”
“There’s no obligation to include a gift for Tŷ Hafan in your will, but we hope that after providing for their loved ones, people will consider remembering us,” continues Abbie. “With their help, we can continue to be a lifeline for all those children and their families across Wales, who need us now and in the future.”
