Sport – Airport Reserves extend Premier League lead

VALE football action returned after a weather enforced absence.

Premier Division leaders Cardiff Airport Reserves continue to storm on through the season with another big win. They came from behind twice against Vale United Reserves to eventually win 7-2, Max Jones hitting a hat trick as Airport extended their lead at the top to eight points – although they have played three more games than nearest rivals Barry Athletic.

Island Marine defeated Penarth Town 5-2. Marine raced into a two-goal lead and Town couldn’t recover. Marine’s Liam Mallam and Jack Blackmore both scored wice with Louis Angove scoring against his old club.

Champions St Athan left it late but came out 4-2 winners against Tynewydd, Seth Talbot and Dewi Cain notching equalisers before Coree Roberts late effort found a way in and James Austin sealed the points in stoppage time.

Vale Athletic fought back from 2-4 down to pick up a well-earned point against AFC Rhoose in a 4-4 draw. Rhoose led 0-2, 1-3 and 2-4 but Matt Rodwell reduced the deficit before Matty Morris levelled and secured a vital point for Athletic.

In the Championship, Vale Madrid moved two points ahead of Cwm Talwg with a game in hand after they came from behind twice against Barry Athletic Reserves to win 4-2, David Evans scoring twice.

Cwm Talwg lost ground on the leaders after they were held 1-1 to nine-men Cardiff Airport Vets. Cole Roberts had given Talwg the lead but Sam Ross levelled in the second half for third-placed Airport.

St Athan Reserves moved up to fifth place as they edged Island Marine Reserves 2-1, Phil Morgan scoring twice, making it 11 goals in five games for the striker.

In League One it was a thriller between the top two as Dinas Powys Development saw their 100% record ended by second-placed Porthkerry Panthers in a 3-3 draw. Porthkerry raced into a 0-2 half time lead but Dinas pegged them back to level before Porthkerry were reduced to 10 men. However, Joe Allwood put Porthkerry back ahead from the spot before they had two more sent off. Dinas rescued a point in the 91st minute when Teifi Jones slotted a penalty to make it 3 – 3 in a frantic contest.

Cadoxton Imps Seconds and Cowbridge Town played out a 2-2 draw, Gavin Underwood scoring for Imps to ensure a share of the points.

Holton Road Reserves fought back from 0-2 down to defeat St Athan Development 3-2, Kayden O’Brien scoring nine minutes from time to give Holton an important victory.

It’s the Christmas break now and the Vale league returns in the New Year.
