Vintage Tractor Run members remember a rugby giant

THE annual Ogmore Castle Vintage Tractor Run took place recently.

Despite the heavy rainstorms, 25 tractors took part. This was down on the previous year, but understandable.

The event was organised by the Glamorgan Iron Horse Vintage Society and they must be congratulated for getting the tractor run off on time and supplying sustenance in the form of bacon butties, tea and coffee.

Breaks on the run were held at the lighthouse in Marcross and The Star in Wick. The money raised this year totalled just under £600, which went to a couple of local charities.

The judges, Rees Lean and David George, decided this year to give the event memento to the tractor driver who had travelled the furthest to take part, and it was presented to Cliff Bull who had left Pembrokeshire at 6.00am to arrive on time. Cliff ’s wife, Anne, is the society’s secretary.

Thanks must go to the supporters who each year give their time and effort. Thanks to Paul Hooper Signs and Robert Williams of Ogmore Farm, whose Castle Field is made available for the tractor run on the first Sunday in October each year.

That same field was the venue on 6th October for the funeral service of Robert’s younger brother Owain, which took place in a large marque and was attended by a very large number of people.

Owain was born at Ogmore Farm 56 years ago and was a giant of a man, both in stature and personality. He worked for many years for the BBC in Wales but would be remembered by most for his days on rugby fields in Wales, playing for Bridgend RFC and then for Cardiff.

Sincere condolences are sent to all Owain’s family for the loss of a loved and respected man, taken long before his time.
