Sport: Conclusive win for Centurions at Tondu

IT was a mixed day for Sully Centurions on Saturday, with a big win for the First XI and a heavy defeat for the previously unbeaten Second XI.

The First XI travelled to Tondu on a baking hot afternoon and, after winning the toss, decided to bat. Openers David Goodway and Tom Davies got off to a flyer, with Davies taking the lead role with an aggressive display. They took the score along to 124 before Davies was caught off Rogin for an excellent 74. In the very next over, Goodway was Rogin’s second victim when he was also caught, for 26.

Ricki Griffett and Gethin Hicks then shared a fourth wicket stand of 40 and, following Ricki’s dismissal for 12, Jake Griffett joined the party and fell to Holmes after an entertaining 25. Hicks and Lloyd Bruce then shared a half century partnership until Bruce was bowled by Williams for 37. Nick Jones joined Hicks for the last three overs and both were still at the crease when the innings closed on an impressive 310 for 6. Rogin’s 3 for 46 was the home side’s best bowler, with most of the others being on the receiving end of some big hitting.

In reply, Tondu lost an early wicket when Davies was caught and bowled by Goodway for four in the fourth over, with eight runs on the board. In fact, Goodway and Kieron Ferriday kept a tight rein on the runs in the early overs. Then Gregory and Owen came together in a half century partnership until Gregory was caught by Ricki Griffett off Nick Jones for 7.

Owen was then joined by Jubinnj, and they enjoyed themselves, getting Tondu to 97 before Ricki Griffett had Owen lbw for 39. Two overs later, Ricki removed Jubinnj’s stumps after he had reached 37. But Tondu were by no means finished, as Williams and Thomas found the boundary regularly in another half century stand. Williams was eventually bowled by Goodway, in his second spell, with a top score of 42. Goodway took a third wicket when he bowled Siju for 8 and Bruce picked up the wicket of Dowle for a duck. Thomas doggedly lasted till the end for 33 not out, but the final score of 199 for was 111 runs short. A convincing win for Centurions, who have now won three out the four games played so far.

The Second XI played Glangrwyney at Burnham Avenue, in what was the first ever meeting between the two clubs. Batting first, the opening pair of Zia Gehlan and stand in skipper Jason Hicks had reached 36 when Zia fell for 10, falling to Guruni in the seventh over. Last week’s hero, Rukshan, missed out when he was caught off Luckhurst for just one. Hicks went for 14, another victim of Guruni, with the score on 45.

Wickets fell with regularity as the visiting attack took control and by the 19^h over Sully were 84 for 6 when top scorer Alex Kelsey was caught off the bowling of Luckhurst for 22. Of the remaining batsmen, only Lane (21) and Vasant (12) reached double figures and when Paul Harrison was dismissed for five in the 31^st over, the innings came to a close with the score on 121 all out. Luckhurst’s 3 for 19 was the top bowling performance for the visitors.

After tea, the Glamgrwyney openers wasted no time in putting bat to ball and had reached 47 when Bharat had Devoy caught by Kelsey for 35. This brought Holmes and Jones together and they began enjoying themselves as Centurions couldn’t get the all-important wicket. When it finally came (the dismissal of Jones for 34, via a catch from behind the stumps by Harrison off Hicks) the damage had been done. Holmes carried his bat for an unbeaten 45 and Glangrwyney, on 125 for 2, won with plenty of overs to spare.

However, Sully managed to cling on to the top spot and will be hoping that normal service will be resumed next week.
