Walking as a group is seen by many medical studies as beneficial to physical and mental health but many people are put off by the fear of not being not fit enough.
Local walking charity Valeways has the answer and has been offering four ‘Coffee Shop Stroller’ events from three locations every month for a while – and this has now been expanded to six events from four locations.
The idea is to meet with a walk leader and friendly regular strollers, have a chat as you gently walk around a mostly flat circuit, enjoy the fresh air and you may have walked a mile or so without realising. Then, if you wish to continue the conversation, join in with a cuppa or an ice cream.
Walk leader, Lynne, says: “The Walk for Carers takes place once a month at Barry Island. Many people are carers nowadays – grandparents caring for children, wives taking care of husbands… it is a job that can take many hours, can be very lonely and can be energy-sapping.
“The walk was created by me, as a carer myself. I realised the need for carers to look after themselves and take time out in order to re-energise and meet other people in a similar situation. The Barry Island strollers are a caring, compassionate, friendly group of people who will support all carers.”
Strollers meet at:
- Walk for Carers, Barry Island Station. Last Thursday of the month, 10:30am
- Stress Buster, Romilly Park, tennis courts. Last Tuesday of the month, 10:30am
- Barry Strollers, Bron y Mor car park, Cold Knap. Alternate Wednesdays 10:30am from 27th April
- Well-being Strollers, Golau Caredig. Alternate Thursdays 2:30 pm from 21st April
No need to book, just turn up and enjoy!
