IT WAS a successful Saturday for Sully Centurions Cricket Club, with comfortable victories for both sides.
The First XI made the short trip to Barry Island to face Barry Athletic. Barry batted first and the opening pair of Kahala (24) and Quick (29) both got their heads down and made a decent start. But after they were dismissed, the home side were soon in trouble. Tom Davies was Sully’s main wicket taker, with figures of 4-34, aided and abetted by Lloyd Bruce with figures of 3-5. Jake Griffett chipped in with two wickets to skittle Athletic, who finished all out for 88.
Centurions’ innings wasn’t a straightforward walkover, as both openers were dismissed cheaply. But after this, the runs began to flow. A hiccup occurred as Sully went from 52-2 to 76-4 in the space of two overs. However, that was the last scare and the target was reached without any more loss in the 18th over.

The Second XI continued their good run of form with an amazing win against Glangrwney at Burnham Avenue. The opening pair of Gurwinder ‘Sonu’ Singh and Basil John both scored centuries and put on 237 for the first wicket. Sonu’s 121 contained 16 fours and three sixes, while Basil hit 15 fours and six sixes on his way to 126.
The visitors were reeling at this point, but Vasant added another 47 runs to keep the pressure on. In fact, although there were no more big scores, all of the middle order batsmen chipped in with runs to help Centurions finish on a massive 393 for 7. However, it has to be said that one Glangrwney bowler deserves a mention, as 15-year-old Mia Martinez took 5-49 in her six overs.
After tea, the visitors began the task of chasing down the mammoth target and the two openers made a good start, with a half century partnership. However, the wickets began to fall on a regular basis. In fact, they went from 119 for 3 to 119 for 6. Then two wickets went down on 123, with the final wicket falling on 131 – giving Sully a win by 262 runs. Waldeck, with 50 and fellow opener Devoy (26) were the only batsmen with significant totals, with only two others reaching double figures. For Centurions, Imran Ahmed (4-24) and Shaffiqur Rehman (3-6) were the pick of the bowlers.
