A 25-YEAR-OLD man from Cadoxton with a series of convictions for shoplifting has been handed extra jail time after he breached court orders, committed further acts of theft and urinated in public.
Joshua Smith, 25, who is already serving a prison sentence for offences including public decency, shop theft and repeated breaches of court orders, appeared before Cardiff Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to two counts of outraging public decency on 28th August and 9th September 2025.
Smith pleaded guilty to additional offences of shoplifting and breaches of a criminal behaviour order imposed by the court on 4th February.
The order prohibited Smith from entering the Asda supermarket on Ffordd y Mileniwm, but on 17th June, he went to the store where he stole goods worth £203 and a separate quantity of items with a value of £174.48.
Smith also breached the criminal behaviour order when he entered Holton Road on 29th March and 13th June, despite being forbidden from the area, but no separate penalties were imposed because they were taken into account alongside other offences.
Smith admitted earlier thefts in Barry, which included stealing a four-pack of Stella Artois lager costing £6.75 from the One Stop shop in December 2025, and two jars of coffee from a supermarket worth £12 on 12th April. Magistrates handed Smith compensation orders for the offences, but no separate penalties were applied.
Magistrates gave Smith a 12-week prison sentence for the £203 theft from Asda, to run concurrently with the term he is already serving. An additional 12-week jail term was given for his second theft at the supermarket and for the criminal behaviour order breach.
The court said the custodial sentence was appropriate because of Smith’s “flagrant disregard for people and their property”. Smith was also ordered to pay compensation to Asda for the two theft offences, totalling £377.48.
Smith has a long history of similar offending. In August 2019, he was sent to a Young Offender Institution for 24 weeks after he pleaded guilty to having a knife in public, possession of cocaine and of breaching a suspended sentence.
In July 2021, Cardiff Crown Court heard how Smith went on a crime spree in Barry which saw him rob a 14-year-old boy of his iPhone and threaten to stab a supermarket worker.
For those offences, Smith was handed a 16-month sentence at a Young Offender Institution, suspended for two years, after the judge said there was a prospect of rehabilitation, but he was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work, complete a 19-day thinking skills programme and a 20-day rehabilitation activity requirement.
In July 2025, magistrates handed Smith an 18-week custodial sentence after he stole alcohol, food and clothing from shops in Barry.
After being released on licence, three months later he was given a further four-week prison sentence when he stole two bottles of vodka from the Morrisons supermarket in Barry.
Last December, Smith was handed another nine-week prison term after he admitted stealing items from supermarkets in Barry during the previous month.
