A series of events to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, spread over four days, are being planned in Cowbridge – with the main event leading up to a beacon lighting on Thursday 2nd June.
A UK bank holiday will begin on Thursday, 2nd June and run to Sunday, 5th June. The four days of celebrations will include public events and community activities, as well as national moments of reflection on The Queen’s 70 years of service. Beacons will be lit throughout the country and indeed throughout the Commonwealth at 9.45pm on Thursday 2nd June.
A Cowbridge Town Council spokesperson said: “Cowbridge with Llanblethian Town Council will be holding a beacon lighting ceremony on Thursday, 2nd June, on the athletic field by the rugby club on the Broad Shoard in Cowbridge. The beacon lighting will be preceded by entertainment from the Rock Choir, Stage Door 1 and Stagecoach Theatre Arts.
“The rugby club will be serving drinks, the Shampan restaurant will have an Indian buffet and there will be ice cream available from Fablas. Gates will open at 7.00pm and entry will be free. The beacon will be lit at 9.45pm.”
The council is keen to hear from local residents who were born at the time of the Queen coming to the throne, so that they can take part in the beacon lighting ceremony. The relevant dates are: 6th February 1952 – the date of the Queen’s accession; 2nd June 1952 – exactly 70 years before the beacon lighting ceremony; 2nd June 1953 – the date of the coronation. On Saturday 4th June and Sunday 5th June there will be a number of street parties in the Cowbridge area, including a Jubilee Party for Llanblethian residents on the Llanblethian Playing Fields on the afternoon of Sunday 5th June, organised by the Llanblethian Community Group.
