Arts festival play looks at David Lloyd George

The play explores the major events of his life.

A PLAY focusing on the life of controversial Welsh politician David Lloyd George comes to Barry this week as part of the Barry Arts Festival.

Featuring actor Llion Williams as Lloyd George, in an English-language drama scripted by award-winning author, Manon Steffan Ros, the one-man show focuses on the complex political and personal life of the Caernarfon MP who became Prime Minister during World War One.

The play is by Mewn Cymeriad / In Character, a theatre company that stages productions of Welsh historical characters and stories.

Barry Arts Festival organiser, Dot Connell, said: “An MP for more than 50 years, Lloyd George was one of the most influential politicians of the early 20th Century.

“Lloyd George had many links with Barry. He was co-leader of the Cymru Fydd movement, which has its roots in Barry; spoke at Barry Market Hall on Broad Street, now the Sir Samuel Romilly, and employed Barry journalist Gareth Jones as his speechwriter and foreign affairs expert.

“This play explores the major events of his life and the choices he made on the journey from a north Wales village to becoming Prime Minister, weighing up the bad and the good of those decisions.”

The play ‘I Am Lloyd George’ is at Cubanas on Broad Street, Barry, on Wednesday, 2nd April at 7.30pm. The performance will last approximately one hour. Tickets are available from Dot Connell on 07982 319456 or online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/barry-arts-festival

This event is supported by Noson Allan / Night Out, a Wales Arts Council scheme. Barry Arts Festival is sponsored by Barry Town Council and Newydd Housing Association.
