Barry Chess Club take on league favourites
Sport | Chess
In a quiet period for Barry Chess Club, there were two matches on consecutive Wednesdays – both away to different Cardiff teams.
The Cardiff Chess Club has so far played very strong teams in all of their matches and are looking favourites to take the top two spots in both divisions.
Firstly, in division 2 the Barracudas took on the Cardiff C team on 23rd February. We had two strong players hoping to match their top two boards, but they played an ineligible player on board 2, incurring a board order infringement.
On the night, only Matthew Davies earned a win for Barry, but the Cardiff side were penalised, so we took a default win on board 2, so the result was a somewhat fortuitous 2-2 draw. We were well satisfied with a share of the spoils.
After three rounds of matches, the Barracudas hold a one-point lead at the top of the table. However, 5 of the 9 teams in this division have a game in hand and it is early days.
The following Wednesday, the Barry Islanders in division 1 made the same journey to take on the division title favourites Cardiff A. Again, Matthew Davies was our only winner on board 1. To beat Tom Brown, who is rated 247 points higher, is an excellent result. Unfortunately, we couldn’t match that on the other three boards although Martin Ricketts on board 4 tried his best to keep everyone awake at night with a very long game.
At the moment, the Barry Islanders sit in third place in the table but are 4.5 points behind leaders Cardiff A – although our game in hand will be played next week.
The Barry Chess Club meets at 7.30pm most Mondays at the West End Club, St Nicholas Road, Barry, CF62 6QY. The club is open to players of all standards; whether you are interested in playing competitive chess or just the occasional friendly games.
New Players welcome
New players are very welcome to just turn up on the night but it is better to contact one of the club members through the website first so that we can explain what is happening on the night. For more details visit here.
