AFTER a slight blip in form, Cardiff Airport have bounced back with three wins on the trot and have secured promotion.
League wins against last season’s champions FC Cwmaman at Jenner Park and an away win at title rivals Caerphilly Athletic means Airport need one point from their remaining two games to secure the title. Alfie Tipples, a brace from Ollie Tipples and Lee Stradling secured the points against FC Cwmaman whilst an own goal, Sonny Lambert and Curtis Scotto sealed the big win against Caerphilly Athletic at Ystrad Mynach 3G.
Sandwiched between the league games, Airport faced Vale United in a SWPL W John Owen Cup semi-final derby. The game was basically over at half-time as Airport went in four goals up. Ollie Tipples (2), Jack Davies and Alfie Tipples were on target. Vale United’s late goal came from Lewis James. Airport will go on to meet Porthcawl Town Athletic in the final on 10th May at USW Treforest in the ‘Seaside Classico’.
Vale United’s hopes of promotion from the Championship petered out with a 0-0 draw against lowly Treforest, followed by a defeat to promotion rivals AFC Wattstown 2-0. However, they still have a say in the promotion places when they face second-placed Clwb Cymric on 26th April.
For Dinas Powys promotion is still mathematically possible but only if results go their way. Two wins against Cardiff Cosmos and Llanrumney United have kept their momentum going. Kylan Erickson, Ben Smart, Jack Preston, Izaac Follon and Lucas Murray were the scorers in the 5-0 win against Cosmos with Will Thomas getting the single goal against Llanrumney.
Dinas Powys’s focus will be on their next three games – must win league battles against promotion rivals Clwb Cymric and AFC Wattstown followed by the SWFA Senior Cup Final against Port Talbot Town on 3rd May.
In Division One West, Sully Sports and Cogan Coronation’s season came to their conclusions with a derby and 1-0 victory for Cogan, Cameron Hodgkins with the single goal. Cogan’s season ended with a 2-0 home defeat to Margam Youth Centre.
However, everything was at stake for Holton Road at the Colcot Sport Centre in their final league game against Llangeinor – who have not lost a league game since November! They needed a point to retain their SWPL D1W place. Holton Road managed a 0-0 draw and the point takes them out of the bottom three – it also guaranteed Llangeinor a promotion top two finish! Honours even and the Great Escape achieved!
