International opera singer’s concert for his local church
The event will be in St Illtud’s Church, Llantwit Major
AN international opera singer is staging a fundraising concert to help maintain his local 12th Century church.
In fact, in this case ‘local’ is an understatement, as Matthew Brook’s home actually overlooks Holy Trinity Church in Marcross. To cater for a larger audience, the concert will be in St Illtud’s Church, Llantwit Major, with Cardiff pianist Catherine Milledge accompanying on piano, on 10th October at 7.30 pm.

Holy Trinity Church, Marcross, is a mid-12th-century Grade I listed place of worship. It is both a historic building of considerable significance and a valued gathering place for residents and parishioners.
Matthew told the Glamorgan Star: “The congregation has worked over many years to raise funds for essential repairs, including work associated with the roof, guttering, internal and external rendering, and protection against water ingress. A recent survey indicated that more than £250,000 will be required to restore the church properly, a sum that is far beyond the resources of such a small community.
“The building retains notable Norman features, including its arches and font, and was last substantially renovated in 1893. Without further restoration, there is concern that this important local church may not remain accessible and fit for use in the decades ahead.”
Matthew Brook’s international career has taken him to major venues including: Carnegie Hall; the Sydney Opera House; Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires; the Palais Garnier for Paris Opera; the BBC Proms; and performances with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He has planned a varied programme intended to combine both poignancy and humour.
Tickets are priced at £15 and may be booked by calling 07876 557146. Donations will also be gratefully received.
