Life sentence following rape convictions of two women

Life sentence following rape convictions of two women:

Joshua Thomas Carney from Cardiff has been sentenced to life in prison for the rape and sexual assault of two females.  He will serve a minimum of ten years in prison.

The 28-year-old entered the home of the two victims during the early morning of Tuesday 1st March.

One of the females bravely managed to call 999 during the incident and Carney was arrested as he was leaving the house.

He was charged with assault, assault with intent of committing a sexual offence, five counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault and theft.

Carney pleaded guilty and today (Monday 22nd August) he was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court.

Detective Constable Ian Booker from South Wales Police, said: “Stranger attacks such as these are extremely unusual in South Wales but, in Joshua Carney, we had an extremely dangerous individual.
“Everyone has the right to feel safe in their own home and our immediate response on March 1 meant Carney was arrested at the scene of this awful incident.”

After he was arrested, Carney refused to be interviewed and prepared a written statement stating he had no memory of the night. He was subsequently interviewed in his cell where he remained silent and under his blanket throughout.
However, he later admitted all charges.

The strength of the evidence resulted in guilty pleas and meant the victims did not have to give evidence in court.

“Following his immediate arrest, a thorough and extensive investigation, which included forensic examination, was carried out to ensure Carney could be brought to justice,” added DC Booker.

“This sickening incident is every woman’s worst nightmare and understandably both females have suffered severe shock and emotional trauma.

“It must have been absolutely terrifying for them and they have been extremely brave throughout this ordeal.

“We hope today’s sentencing brings some sense of closure and allows them to begin the process of regaining their confidence.

“This investigation reflects our commitment to protecting women from violence, and to keeping Cardiff safe.”

South Wales Police (SWP) say that the Tackling violence and abuse against women and girls is a long-standing priority for the force and that they recognise that concern regarding personal safety and violence is as great as it has ever been.

SWP are encouraging people to come forward to report incidents to them here.
